BTA Advocacy: Oregon's Voice for Cyclists

The BTA’s advocacy work is only as strong as our constituents’ voices. We work at the local, state and national level to make bicycling a safe, convenient option and a part of the community’s everyday transportation system. Learn more, and lend us your voice!

See the BTA Advocacy Calendar for upcoming opportunities to get involved with bike issues you care about.

Portland Metro Area

Since 1990 the BTA has advocated for a network of safe and innovative bicycle facilities connecting bike boulevards, shared roadways, cycletracks and trails. We work with public and private agencies to track the spending of transportation dollars throughout the region. We encourage businesses to improve bike accessibility by offering resources for bike parking and commuter benefits.

Oregon State Legislature

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance is the voice of bicyclists at the Oregon state capitol. We represent bicyclists and the bicycle industry, and are recognized as a powerful grassroots lobby. We have a long record of success of working with legislators to pass good laws and defeat bad ones, with the goal of improving cycling in Oregon.

Local Communities in Oregon and SW Washington

The BTA depends on our network of members as a principle organizing tool in local communities. For local issues, only local voices can be truly effective.

Our role is to support active BTA members in effecting change by:

* Connecting them to other local BTA member-advocates;
* Providing technical advice about bike facility design;
* Sharing our successful advocacy experiences;
* Connecting advocates to local decisionmakers and allies; and
* Helping advocates learn who’s making transportation decisions and how they’re being made.

We prioritize projects that have demonstrated local support from a group of advocates and that fit with our mission and core values.

Federal Govenment

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance works with several national bicycling organizations to help citizens weigh in on issues of national importance. We organize a delegation to attend the national Bike Summit each year, and we pass along action alerts to our members and constituents. In addition, the BTA continues to play a leadership role in shaping national Safe Routes to School policies and programs.

Oregon is the only state whose complete Congressional delegation are members of the Bike Caucus, an informal group of Representatives and Senators organized by Congressman Earl Blumenauer.
