Job Opening: Metro-Area Advocate

Job Duties

The Metro-Area Advocate works for better bicycling facilities in the Portland metro area, and assists BTA members across Oregon. Primary areas of activity include:

  • Identifying which projects and processes are strategic priorities for the BTA
  • Creating strong relationships with decisionmakers and bureaucratic partners
  • Engaging members and the bicycling community through grassroots organizing and offering them ways to participate in creating positive change for bicycling
  • Communicating to BTA members about current BTA initiatives and successes
  • Creating a strong sense of community among BTA members

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

  • Experience in political advocacy and issue or electoral campaigns
  • Experience testifying and presenting to groups and elected officials
  • Experience with grassroots organizing and getting people to take action
  • Knowledge of bicycle planning, engineering, and facilities design
  • The ability to create a sense of community with an organization’s members and supporters
  • Experience working with the media, both friendly and adversarial reporters
  • The ability to write clearly and fluently
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage many tasks at one time and meet deadlines
  • Experience supervising and working with volunteers
  • Understanding of the inner workings of the City of Portland, Metro, and other local governments
  • Good computer skills (Microsoft Office, Mac OS X, FileMaker Pro, blogging)
  • A sense of humor and the ability to work as a part of a team
  • A strong belief in the benefits of bicycling for the environment, public health, and community livability

Salary

$30,000-$36,000/yr depending on experience and qualifications. 40 hour work week. Benefits include health and dental, retirement, vacation.
