BTA at Work:

State and National Leadership
on Safe Routes to Schools

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance has spearheaded legislative successes in Oregon and represented Safe Routes to School interests here and around the country.

Since 2000, the BTA’s Safe Routes to School activities have included:

  • Founding member and Steering Committee member of the National Safe Routes to School Partnership
  • Founding the Oregon Safe Routes to School Legislative Coalition and creating the Oregon Safe Routes to Schools bill HB2742
  • Creating Oregon’s first Safe Routes to School bill in 2001, which required school districts to coordinate with cities and counties to identify hazards that keep children from walking and biking to school safely.
  • Passing a subsequent Safe Routes to School Bill (HB 2742) in June 2005 to create a Safe Routes to School program and fund for encouragement, education, engineering and enforcement in school neighborhoods
  • Serving as a lead contributor to the National Safe Routes to School Curriculum being developed by the League of American Bicyclists
  • Participating in, and now chairing and leading, the Oregon Walk + Bike to School Committee.
  • Working with the Oregon Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity to create a statewide Physical Activity Plan
  • Serving as a founding member of the Oregon Active Community Environments Coalition
  • Representing the bicycling community on the Portland Community Traffic Safety Coordination Council
  • Serving as a member of the Portland Safe Communities Coalition
