Walk and Bike to School

Oregon’s Walk + Bike program is coordinated by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) to encourage children, youth, and families to use safe, active, transportation to get to and from school and throughout their communities throughout the year. The BTA is supported by partner organizations statewide and builds on existing Safe Routes to School partnerships to reach more schools than ever and encourage more Oregon children and their families to be active and safe every time they travel to school.

Two statewide Walk + Bike events take place each year, with many more events and activities occurring at the local and regional levels.

May: Walk + Bike to School Challenge Month
This statewide event is a friendly competition that encourages students to walk and bike to school for the whole month of May. In 2009, 60 schools and over 4,000 individuals participated in the event. Record participation is expected among elementary and middle schools in 2010, and for the first time, high schools and universities are also invited to participate.

October: Walk + Bike to School Day
This international event held on the first Wednesday of October each year. In 2008 over 2,800 events were held in the US and 168 schools in Oregon participated. With major support from the Oregon Walk + Bike to School Committee, the BTA helps schools around the state make this event a success. The BTA and our partner organizations offer ongoing support, technical assistance and resources for schools and communities to encourage more kids to walk and bike to school throughout the year.
